Donor -Advised Funds
Donor advised funds enable the founding donors to actively participate in grant making by suggesting charitable organizations to receive gifts. The ACCF assists the founding donors by maintaining fund records, researching grant requests, and connecting them with potential grant recipients. Donor-advised funds are endowed funds which allow the yearly endowment income to provide the funds necessary for granting purposes.

Andy and Bernadine Appleman
Life long Decatur residents, Bernadine 'Bessie' and Andy Appelman were very active in the Decatur and surrounding area. They had an impact on our community and those who established this fund wanted to honor their memory.
They were both born and raised in the Decatur area and came from large families. Since 1926, Andy's parents owned the Applemans Grocery Store located next to the current location of the West End Restaurant (Monroe and Seventh St.) They ran the flourishing Appelman's Grocery store next to the railroad tracks on Monroe Street. For over 40 years (1934- July 1973), Andy Appelman owned and operated the well known West End Restaurant. Andy was the 'face' of the restaurant with the customers while Bessie took care of the kitchen.
Andy took care of people that were less fortunate than he and his family. He was truly a compassionate businessman and a concerned community leader. It was reported that years ago, when there were wayward travelers (refered to as hobos), Andy would offer a free hot meal for those unable to afford such a luxury.
Andy and Bessie had a real zest for life. Andy had a private pilot's license which gave the two of them the opportunity to fly around the country. Andy was also a county councilman and a member of the Alcohol Beverage Commission.
Both Andy and Bessie bowled and traveled to bowling tournaments together. Andy loved to golf and did so almost every day during the summer.
They were both active in the Elks Lodge, Moose, Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Parish and other community organizations. They enjoyed working on the farm and gardening. Andy loved going to sporting events (Reds games, college games, etc.) and Bessie would happily accompany him.
Andy and his wife, Alice (Kriegel) had three daughters: Miriam (Stephens), Norma Jean 'Tommy' (Yost), and Patricia 'Patti' Mansfield. Alice died in 1938. On January 6, 1954, Andy married Bernadine Faurote, and they had one daughter, Andrea Marie (Appelman) Alison. Together they have 19 grandchildren.
Andy and Bessie were very involved with the church and family. An elite group, Andrew Appelman was one of five students of the first graduating class of Decatur Catholic High School. He was a member of St. Mary's Parish for over 50 years. The three older daughters graduated from St. Joseph High School and Andrew attended St. Joe grade school and graduated from Bellmont High School. They felt it was necessary for their children to get a solid education and attend college. They also made sure they had an appreciation for their extended family.
One of the things the Appleman's enjoyed was to host a family reunion at the farm during the summer. This farm, located west of Decatur (across from Thunderbird), has been in the Appelman family for over seven generations.
The family wanted to follow the path of compassion and giving as demonstrated by Andy and Bessie. They want to make a positive impact on Decatur by giving back. We wanted our family involved in this so they continue to remember their grandparents and emphasize to them the importance of giving back to the community.
This fund was established as a donor advised fund which will provide support primariliy for nonprofit organizations in this community following the giving path of their parents.

Al Fleming Family Donor Advised Fund
Allen Lee "Al" Fleming, 90, was a lifelong Decatur resident. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Decatur. Additionally, he was a member of the American Legion Post #43 and the Elks lodge #993 both in Decatur. He was an honorably discharged member of the United States Army during the Korean War.
Al loved operating anything and everything that was powered whether it was construction equipment, planes or boats. Al Fleming long remembers the comments made by his former high school principal, "You'll never get beyond digging ditches." In a way, his principal was correct, as Al's business, which he is now retired and his son operates, is the very successful Fleming Excavating, Inc.
Years later, the same principal was known to say, "I predicted all you would do is dig ditches-- I had no idea you would be the president of the company and OWN all the equipment that dug ditches, built bridges, and construct roads." Al was the President and Founder of Fleming Excavating / Al Fleming, Inc. for 38 years retiring in 1993. He was also the founder of the Adams County Sand and Gravel, Inc. and founder of Fleming Properties, Inc.
Hard work paid off for Mr. Fleming and in his free time, he enjoyed floating the Mississippi River and other large bodies of water in his new T-45 Cruiser- Formula Boat. Al enjoyed boating whenever possible in the Great Lakes and in Florida. He was especially proud to have completed the journey from the Great Lakes to Florida via the Mississippi River and also via the East Coast.
Al Fleming established this family donor-advised fund with generous and extraordinary flare... he donated his Formula T41 watercraft. The actual selling price established this fund with $130,000. The interest earned on this fund will be distributed by his children: Greg, Nancy (Covell), and Candace (Williamson).
The ACCF respectfully remembers Allen Lee "Al" Fleming, 90.
