John Earl Lingenfelter was born on October 6, 1945 in Altoona, Pennsylvania.  John earned his associates degree in drafting and design from Pennsylvania State in 1965 began work at the International Harvester (I.H.) in Ft. Wayne in the engine laboratory.  He left I.H. in 1973 to start Lingenfelter Racing, now Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE).  He was the owner / operator of the LPE in Decatur, IN for 30 years. 
 
John had a passion for cars and engines and an infatuation with speed.  John was a champion racer and a world record holder.  His company, LPE, was internationally known and an often-used name in the sophisticated world of speed, engines, and record-breaking races.   
 
John’s infatuation for speed was his obsession and his nemesis.   
 
In October 2002, while driving the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier at Pomona, California, John was  involved in a serious accident.  He died in Decatur, Indiana, on December 25, 2003.
