Butch Gilbert, 69, married Linda (Wolfe) Gilbert on February 28, 1970. They have four children: Beverly, Vernon, Julie, and Jeremy, 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Butch and Linda were married for 48 years.

He worked for Baker & Schultz for 30 years and then Rolling Rock and retired in 2014 from Crosby Excavating. He was a Volunteer Firefighter for Decatur for 20 years and a former member of Moose Lodge #1311.

Butch was a Decatur Reserve police office for five years. He was a bail bondsman for 25 years and was always supportive of the police department. When Decatur got their first K9, he bought the police-dog its lifesaving vest.

Butch had a big heart and was quite the handy man. It was typical for him to mentor young boys, teaching them life skills such as carpentry, car-repair, electrical repair, and all matters of general household restoration.

It is because of these many attributes, this scholarship will be awarded to a promising student that will emulate these skills.
