Tragedy, love, respect, honor and a devoted community are the ingredients that established this endowment.  Trooper Elson’s young life was abruptly shortened on April 3, 1999, when he attempted to make a seemingly routine traffic stop.  What occurred next left a community stunned and took Cory’s life.

A plaque on Advanced Auto, 13th Street, Decatur denotes the fateful location of the incident while a memorial tribute located at the Decatur Police Station, at 521 N. Third Street, memorializes Cory’s vow to ‘Serve and Protect’.

This fund, initiated by his family, friends, and coworkers, grew through the generous giving of this community.  Each year this scholarship is awarded to an Adams County student.
