Doyle was a graduate of Ball State University, and Sara Lu is a graduate of University of Nebraska. Mrs. Collier taught school before her marriage and later worked for the Department of Education where she prepared materials for use in public schools.
They came to Adams County after Mr. Collier completed four years in the Navy, where he served as Ordinance Officer. Most of his time was spent at the United States Naval Air Base near Jacksonville, Florida.
After Mr. Collier’s discharge from the Navy, he was associated with the Maryland Academy of Sciences in Baltimore. There he prepared educational exhibits for the academy. Collier returned to Indiana in 1947 to establish a home at Homestead 43 in Decatur. He had prepared to be an industrial arts teacher, and his first teaching job was at Monmouth High School from 1947 to 1949. He then went to Adams Central the first year of consolidation and taught there until his retirement in 1964. It was during this time that Doyle Collier and Jack Hurst organized the first Rifle Club in the northern Indiana high schools. Also during this time, Mr. Collier was cited as "outstanding industrial arts teacher of the year". Mr. Collier retired from teaching to devote full time to Life Insurance. He was joined by his sons, David and Richard, in 1972 and together they managed the Collier Insurance Agency for Columbus Life Insurance Company.
This fund has been created by David and Sandra Collier in honor of Doyle and Sara Lu, who so loved helping others and their community. Their intentions are to provide support to Adams County residents who submit grant requests to Adams County Community Foundation in the areas of their personal interests.
