Mr. James Briggs, Jr., shown below as a Lt. Briggs, is a ’43 Harvard graduate, and has been C.E.O. of the Bank of Geneva since 1950, while son, Andrew, holds the position of President. Jim also has served as an ACCFoundation Board member and Finance chr. since 1995.
Mrs. Sara (Sink) Briggs, shown as Jim’s fiancée, graduated from the Michigan State University with her degree in education. Sara taught for several years at the Geneva elementary school. They have four sons, two granddaughters, and one step-grandson. Sharing their love of travel and music, Jim and Sara continue the long-lived family tradition of being very active with community service.
Mr. James Briggs, Sr. was Geneva’s oldest businessman in point of continuous years of service. He served the Bank of Geneva for 53 years and was its longest-term employee. He was employed in 1912 until his death in 1965. Also active in civic affairs, Mr. Briggs, Sr., served many years on the Adams County Memorial Hospital Board.
At his death, surviving were his wife Mary (Hoskinson) - please see John F. and Sadie (Hoskinson) Snow Heritage Fund (pg. 15), and two sons: William Briggs and James D., Jr. and four grandsons: John, Richard, Andrew, and Christopher. Jim’s grandfather, Mr. Andrew G. Briggs, was a prominent Geneva banker and businessman. In 1946, he had been in business in Geneva for a longer period of time than any other individual merchant. In 1882, he bought the hardware stock of Geo. Donart, and, with son, Richard, operated the Briggs Hardware Store in Geneva. He and his wife, Margaret Day Briggs had two sons James D. and Richard A. One of the original founders of the Bank of Geneva, at the time of his death, May 11, 1946, Mr. Briggs had held positions in the Bank since its inception.
The James and Sara Briggs Family Heritage Fund will be used to provide financial support to the organizations of their interest in this community.
