In 1990, Dick Wemhoff sensed a need for young boys to connect and grow while participating in structured after-school activities. He began sharing his vision and through generous donations founded the Boys Club of Decatur offering creative programming at the Villa Lanes Bowling Alley owned by the Mies family.
During the past two decades, the Club has experienced much growth, became affiliated with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and began including girls into its programming, and prospered with faithful support from the citizens of Adams County. BGCAC (Boys & Girls Club of Adams County) currently operates at two locations – the Decatur Club at the site of the former Erie Railroad depot building and the South Adams Club (est. 2003) at the Senior Center in Berne. The combined daily attendance averages between 150 and 200 youth, ages 6-17. The annual enrollment fee is $5 and the Clubs do not discriminate regarding membership.
With over 1,000 unduplicated youth served since the inception of our Clubs, our goal is for every youngster in Adams County to enjoy the benefits of belonging. Not only is the Club a safe place for kids to go after school and on most non-school days, but it is also a place where each child has the opportunity to grow socially, emotionally and academically.
